PREBIOTIC: FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are a form of water-soluble carbohydrate. Composed of short fructose chains, they are a type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by the human body so they don’t have any effect on blood sugar levels. Because they are subtly sweet and of low caloric value, FOS are commonly used as an alternative sweetener in certain foods.

PROBIOTICS: Lactobacillus sp., Bifidobacterium

Lactobacillus, a genus of gram-positive, facultative anaerobic or microaerophilic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria. They are a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group that convert sugars to lactic acid. In humans, they constitute a significant component of the microbiota at a number of body sites, such as the digestive system urinary system and genital system. Lactobacillus forms biofilms in the vaginal and gut microbiota allowing them to persist during harsh environmental conditions and maintain ample populations. Lactobacillus exhibits a mutual relationship with the human body as it protects the host against potential invasions by pathogens, and in turn, the host provides a source of nutrients.

Lactobacillus plantarum is found in the human gastrointestinal tract and helps in reducing gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with antibiotics. L.plantarum produces anti-microbial peptides and exopolysaccharides and works to maintain a balance of good and bad bacteria while helping with digestion and optimizing levels of vitamins and minerals. It can also increase iron absorption and it helps in improving cognitive abilities.
Lactobacillus leichmannii is adjuvant to the production of Vitamin B12.
Lactobacillus casei can be found in various environments such as raw and fermented dairy products, intestinal tracts and reproductive systems of humans and animals as well as in fresh and fermented plant products. It helps protect the human body from diseases and illnesses by restricting the growth of various types of harmful bacteria that cause infection and be detrimental to an individual’s health. Lactobacillus casei suppresses blood corticosterone levels and is beneficial against both respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. L.casei extracts can kill gastric cancer cells and thereby decrease the viability of liver cancer cells. The lactic acid produced by L.casei through fermentation can be used to make cheese and yogurts and serve as probiotics to help reduce cholesterol levels, enhance immune response, control diarrhea, alleviate lactose intolerance and inhibit intestinal pathogens.
Lactobacillus cellobiosus has many health benefits and multiple probiotic properties such as boosting the immune response, improving liver health and lowering cholesterol levels. Its antimicrobial and antioxidative properties protect against food-derived infections and reducing the incidence of respiratory tract infection and vaginal microbial infections.

Lactobacillus brevis is found in food such as sauerkraut and pickles. L.brevis produces sugars and variety of organic acids, specifically acetic acid and ethanol. L.brevis reduces monosodium glutamate (MSG) levels and MSG symptom complex in humans. L.brevis decreases glucose levels in diabetics and has a mild beneficial effect on sleep in subjects with insomnia. L.brevis is a type of lactic acid bacteria found in milk products and in some plants as they decompose.
Lactobacillus salivarius is found in the mouth and the small intestine. It can be used for maintaining dental health and improve gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). L.salivarius can mainly occur in the colon, small intestines, vagina and mouth. This microorganism produces its own antibiotics that are specifically targeted against invading pathogenic bacteria. Since it produces lactic acid, the acidity helps fight bad bacteria and make an ideal environment for other probiotics. L.salivarius benefits asthma patients and diabetics, and also aids in the digestion of proteins. It decreases the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exhibits beneficial immunomodulatory activity. Because of this, like many strains, L.salivarius is thought to play a big role in boosting the immune system.

L.acidophilus can support gut health by increasing the amounts of healthy bacteria in the intestines. L.acidophilus can reduce the symptoms of certain allergies and eczema. L.acidophilus implants itself on the intestinal walls, as well as on the lining of the vagina, cervix and urethra, thereby preventing other organisms from multiplying to the extent that they can cause infections.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus helps keep the gastrointestinal (GI) tract healthy and can help in digestion and normal bowel function. L.rhamnosus is resilient even in poor environmental conditions. L.rhamnosus helps reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections in children. It also helps to reduce reactions and inflammation in individuals with eczema and other food allergies.

Bifidobacterium infantis naturally releases an acid that kills harmful organisms to aid digestion and metabolism. Bifidobacterium infantis relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and help reduce abdominal pain. It may also help reduce gas and bloating.

Saccharomyces boulardii is a tropical strain of yeast which is considered to have non-pathogenic and non-systemic with biotherapeutic features. It has been found to be an effective probiotic that combats a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders and variety of diarrheal symptoms. It may help maintain normal colonic populations of helpful Bifidobacteria strains and support the body’s defenses against potential intestinal pathogens. It has also shown to weaken the effects of microbial disease caused by toxins. S.boulardii enhances the immune response in pediatric acute gastroenteritis. It also has been known to secrete a variety of proteases which have inhibiting abilities on pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Lutein is considered the ‘eye vitamin’ which has been shown to reduce risks of blindness and cataracts. It is not made in the body and must be consumed in diet.
